Setting Up the RoofBunk Explorer

Setting Up the RoofBunk Explorer

The RoofBunk Explorer is a soft-shell roof tent designed for versatility, comfort, and compact transport. It combines a quick fold-out structure with high-strength waterproof materials, making it suitable for weekend touring or longer road trips.
This guide explains mounting, setup, and care to help you achieve reliable performance in all conditions.

Mounting and Installation

The Explorer fits most roof-bar systems rated for a dynamic load of at least 60 kg.

Before fitting:

  • Confirm bars are spaced 85–110 cm apart.

  • Ensure each bar can bear half the total tent + occupant weight.

  • Use the supplied stainless-steel U-bolt bracket kit and rubber spacers to prevent slippage.

Once installed, the tent can remain on the vehicle permanently or be removed seasonally for storage.

Setup Process

The Explorer opens laterally across the vehicle using a fold-out hinge frame and telescopic ladder for support.

To set up:

  1. Remove the PVC travel cover.

  2. Unclip the retaining straps.

  3. Pull the ladder outward until the folded platform opens fully.

  4. Extend the ladder to the ground and lock its joints.

  5. Insert the window and canopy poles as needed.

Setup takes approximately 2–3 minutes once familiar with the process.

To close:

  1. Remove poles and fold the fabric inward.

  2. Fold the ladder toward the base to collapse the platform.

  3. Re-secure the travel cover using the integrated zip and straps.

The folded profile sits low against the roof, keeping drag and wind noise minimal.

Interior Layout and Comfort

The Explorer provides a generous internal space suitable for two adults or a family with one child.
Key features include:

  • High-density foam mattress (6 cm) with washable cover.

  • Windows on three sides for panoramic airflow.

  • Integrated mosquito mesh on all openings.

  • Roof vent for cross-breeze and condensation control.

The soft-shell design allows slight flex for comfort while maintaining stability in wind. Bedding such as sleeping bags can remain inside when closing the tent.

Build and Materials

  • Base: 25 mm aluminium honeycomb panel.

  • Fabric: 280 gsm poly-cotton ripstop canvas (PU-coated, waterproof to 3000 mm).

  • Cover: Heavy-duty PVC travel cover with sealed zip.

  • Poles: Powder-coated aluminium for lightweight durability.

All seams are double-stitched and heat-sealed to maintain waterproofing.

Vehicle Compatibility

The Explorer fits medium to large vehicles including hatchbacks, estates, SUVs, and small vans.
Closed height averages 30 cm, maintaining access to most 2 m car parks.
Total weight is around 55 kg, keeping load within most dynamic roof limits.

Storage and Care

After trips, open the tent to dry completely before long-term storage.
Clean canvas with mild soap and warm water; avoid solvents.
Lubricate hinge points and ladder locks with silicone spray twice yearly.
For winter storage, remove the ladder and keep the tent in a dry area with minimal folding pressure on the fabric.

Summary

The RoofBunk Explorer delivers dependable performance with minimal setup time.
Its lightweight fold-out design, robust materials, and compact packed size make it ideal for couples or small families seeking a flexible soft-shell tent for touring across the seasons.
