Setting Up the RoofBunk Roamer – Compact Hard Shell Roof Tent for 2–3 People

The RoofBunk Roamer is a hard shell roof tent designed for reliability, speed, and comfort. With a reinforced ABS shell, quick gas-assisted opening, and a dual-layer mattress system, it combines the toughness of a hardshell design with an easy setup process.
This guide explains how to mount, open, and operate the Roamer safely and efficiently for long-term use.

Mounting and Installation

The RoofBunk Roamer is compatible with most roof-bar systems rated for a dynamic load of 75 kg or higher.

Before mounting:

  • Ensure the roof bars are spaced 70–90 cm apart for stability.

  • Confirm all brackets, bolts, and plates sit flush with the tent’s underside channels.

  • Use the supplied stainless-steel mounting kit.

  • Tighten fixings evenly to prevent shell distortion.

The tent’s moderate weight allows for single-person installation with assistance. Once fitted, it can remain mounted throughout the year without weather degradation.

Setup Process

The Roamer uses gas-assist struts to enable a one-person setup in under 60 seconds.

To open:

  1. Release both side latches.

  2. Allow the top shell to lift automatically until fully extended.

  3. Extend the telescopic ladder and secure the base on firm ground.

  4. Adjust window and skylight panels for airflow or privacy.

To close:

  1. Remove any loose bedding that exceeds mattress height.

  2. Pull the top shell downward using the integrated handles.

  3. Fold fabric evenly inward.

  4. Engage both latches until sealed.

The high-tension struts remain stable even in moderate wind, ensuring the tent can be opened safely in variable weather.

Interior Layout and Comfort

Inside, the Roamer offers a spacious sleeping area for two adults or a small family.
Key features include:

  • 6 cm dual-layer foam mattress with removable cover.

  • Panoramic side windows and roof skylight for natural light and ventilation.

  • Integrated LED light rail and pocket organisers.

  • Anti-condensation base layer for improved comfort in cold or humid conditions.

The rigid shell allows bedding such as sleeping bags and pillows to remain inside when packed down, reducing setup time at camp.

Build and Materials

  • Shell: ABS thermoplastic with aluminium reinforcement frame.

  • Fabric: 280 gsm poly-cotton ripstop canvas (PU-coated, waterproof to 3000 mm).

  • Base: Honeycomb aluminium panel for lightness and strength.

  • Hardware: Stainless-steel hinges and struts.

The result is a strong, weather-resistant structure designed for frequent travel and extended outdoor use.

Vehicle Compatibility

The Roamer suits medium to large vehicles, including estates, SUVs, and vans.
Its aerodynamic shape reduces drag during travel, while the hard-shell top minimises noise and wind resistance.
At approximately 65 kg, it strikes a balance between strength and portability, making it suitable for most roof-bar systems that meet standard dynamic load ratings.

Storage and Care

When not in use, the tent can remain mounted or be stored vertically in a dry space.
After use, ensure the fabric is fully dry before closure to prevent mildew.
Clean the shell with mild detergent and a soft cloth. Lubricate hinges and gas struts with silicone spray twice yearly to maintain smooth operation.

Summary

The RoofBunk Roamer combines the durability of a hard-shell tent with the simplicity of a rapid one-person setup.
Compact, quiet, and reliable in all weather, it’s a practical option for travellers looking for efficiency and comfort without compromising performance.
