Setting Up the RoofBunk Explorer XL

Setting Up the RoofBunk Explorer XL

The RoofBunk Explorer XL expands on the design of the standard Explorer, offering a larger sleeping area for up to four people.
With a reinforced folding frame, durable waterproof fabric, and a quick-deploy ladder system, it provides practical comfort for families or longer trips.
This guide explains how to mount, open, and maintain the Explorer XL for reliable year-round use.

Mounting and Installation

The Explorer XL fits most roof-bar systems rated for a dynamic load of 75 kg or higher.

Before fitting:

  • Space roof bars 90–120 cm apart for maximum platform support.

  • Use aluminium or steel crossbars with a flat or T-track profile.

  • Ensure each bar can carry at least half the total weight (tent + occupants).

  • Tighten U-bolts evenly to avoid strain on the base panel.

Once installed, the tent can remain fitted season-round thanks to its weather-sealed travel cover and corrosion-resistant fittings.

Setup Process

The Explorer XL opens sideways across the vehicle using a dual-hinge frame and telescopic ladder support.

To set up:

  1. Remove the PVC cover and unclip the travel straps.

  2. Pull the ladder outward until the folded platform unfolds.

  3. Extend the ladder fully and lock the joints.

  4. Insert the window and canopy poles as required.

Setup takes around three minutes once familiar with the process.

To close:

  1. Remove poles and fold the fabric inward.

  2. Collapse the ladder, guiding the canvas neatly inside.

  3. Zip the PVC cover securely and fasten straps before travel.

The folded tent remains compact and streamlined for efficient driving.

Interior Layout and Comfort

Inside, the Explorer XL provides an extended floor plan suitable for families or small groups.
Key features include:

  • High-density foam mattress (6 cm) with washable cover.

  • Three-sided window panels with mosquito mesh and blackout lining.

  • Roof vent for airflow and condensation control.

  • Integrated gear pockets for small essentials.

The increased width allows comfortable sleeping space for three adults or two adults + two children.

Build and Materials

  • Base: Reinforced aluminium honeycomb panel.

  • Fabric: 280 gsm ripstop poly-cotton canvas, waterproof to 3000 mm.

  • Cover: Heavy-duty PVC travel cover with welded seams.

  • Frame: Powder-coated aluminium hinge structure.

  • Hardware: Stainless-steel bolts, brackets, and ladder.

All materials are weather-resistant and UV-stable for long-term exposure.

Vehicle Compatibility

The Explorer XL suits larger vehicles such as SUVs, estate wagons, and vans.
Approximate weight: 63 kg.
Closed height: 30 cm, maintaining access to most 2 m car-park barriers.
Its low-profile cover and tapered design reduce drag and road noise during motorway travel.

Storage and Care

After each trip, open the tent to allow complete drying before long-term storage.
Clean with mild soap and warm water; avoid harsh solvents or pressure washers.
Lubricate hinge joints and ladder locks with silicone spray every six months.
Store in a dry, ventilated area if removed from the vehicle.

Summary

The RoofBunk Explorer XL delivers the space of a family tent with the convenience of a quick-fold roof system.
Easy to set up, stable in wind, and comfortable for multi-night stays, it’s a dependable option for families or groups seeking a versatile soft-shell tent for year-round adventures.
